“Music as Art” is the fourth pathway in Pathways to Music. In the book, I try to move away from discussing art as a thing, arguing instead for thinking of art as a special category of experience, a moment of interaction, a “dialogue over a catalyst.” That catalyst might be a painting, for example, but the “art moment” happens when the viewer thinks about that painting, or when an artist makes a painting in response to it, or when a composer writes a piece of music inspired by it. The art exists in the dialogue. As I explain in the introduction to this pathway, almost anything can be called art, but for most people, it is easier to experience the “art moment” when considerable skill is demonstrated through the work. If a work demonstrates little skill, more effort is required on our part to create meaningful dialogue. See the blog entries on Music as Art here, and feel free to contribute your own!
