“Music as Emotion” is the second pathway in Pathways to Music. In the introduction to this pathway, I describe two ways that music moves us: the visceral path, which involves the physical sensation of sound waves coursing around and through our bodies; and the contextual path, which involves all the ways that our experience shapes the music that we hear. In discussing the contextual path, I distinguish between universal contexts shared by all (or most) people, individual contexts relevant only to one person or a small group of people, and cultural contexts relevant for larger groups of people. In exploring “music as emotion,” most of our attention is given to cultural contexts that shape how we hear music. See the blog entries on Music as Emotion here, and feel free to contribute your own!
