“Music as Work” is the third pathway in Pathways to Music. In the book, I outline three broad, interrelated categories of how music can be work. The first is the work of mastering a musical craft, whether that craft is singing, playing an instrument, composing, or producing music in a contemporary music studio. The second is the work of performing music, which depends on mastery of a musical craft but also requires that an individual learn how to perform with other musicians and respond to them in real time. An extraordinary example of this kind of work is improvisation. The third category is the work of listening, a required part of the other two categories, which can also embrace the experience of listening to music as an audience member. Just because it’s work doesn’t mean, of course, that it can’t be a pleasure! See the blog entries on Music as Work here, and feel free to contribute your own!
